Where is the limit between being overweight and obesity?

Being overweight or obese is defined as having an excess amount of fat tissue, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Overweight or obesity is a major health problem worldwide, as the number of people suffering from these conditions is still on the increase.

A person can be overweight, but not be considered obese. A solution to determine if a person is considered obese is by looking at his body mass index (BMI).

To find out,  simply calculate your Body Mass index (BMI) or the ratio between weight and height :

Body Mass Index is the ratio between weight (kg) and the square of the height (m²) :

BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²)

Example : a 70 kg person who measures 1,75 m has a BMI  of 70 / (1,75)² = 22.9

Classification according to BMI
Underweight <18.5
Normal range 18.5 – 24.9
Overweight >25.0
Pre-obesity >25.0 – 29.9
Obesity >30.0
Class I Obesity 30.0 – 34.9
Class II Obesity 35.0 – 39.9
Classe III Obesity >40.0
